About Anna Lockwood

I'm a full time artist, living and working in Oxfordshire, currently I am focusing on birds as subject matter.

Painting birds coincided with moving to the Oxfordshire countryside and spending much more of my time outside.  I have been involved in some planting schemes, and whilst working realised that the life of birds is much like ours; arguments, fights for territory, a pecking order, and a love of food!

The birds I paint have an anthropomorphic feel, which lend themselves well to oversize, imposing portraits.  I work in acrylic paint on canvases measuring over a metre, creating images that are larger than life.

My current work deals with relationships.  I like to paint characters who skew the social norms of history.  It's liberating to paint the underdog as the aggressor.  I also feel it's important to be able to look at my work and see just a bird; there is a narrative, but the work needs to stand up without it and be aesthetically potent.
